Camp Footloose is an annual camp run
by Arthritis NSW for children aged
8 to 18 with any and
all forms of arthritis. The main aim of
Camp Footloose is to provide a fun
environment
for these children to learn more about
arthritis and ways of coping with it,
meet other children
and teenagers with arthritis, gain and
develop leisure and sporting skills,
increase their
confidence and self esteem, and enable
them to gain some control over their
arthritis
and their lives. Unlike regular school
and holiday camps, Camp Footloose has
a higher
ratio of leaders to children and this enables
the children to participate in activities
they wouldn’t normally be able to.
Camp Footloose is made possible by the
generosity and support of sponsors. If

What can I expect at Camp Footloose?
The theme for Camp Footloose 2009 was “Go Wild”. The aim of the camp was to help the children get in touch with their fun, silly and wild sides. Living with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) can be painful and debilitating so it was very helpful for them to view ways that the exercise they need to do to keep mobile can be enjoyable and not a chore. It was a chance for them to go wild in a very supported environment.
How big is the camp?
In 2009, 44 children and teenagers attended Camp Footloose from all over the country. We had 26 from NSW, 1 from ACT, 2 from Tasmania and 15 from Queensland. We had 20 Arthritis NSW staff and leaders to ensure it ran smoothly. We had 2 Occupational Therapy Students, 5 Physiotherapy Students, 4 Peer leaders, 3 former student leaders and 2 leaders came with the children from Queensland. There was a nurse and 3 Arthritis NSW staff members to look after the children and help them participate in the activities
