Healthy snack hacks

When the craving hits or when you have a grumbling belly, it is easy to reach for the fridge or pantry for junk food. But if your fridge is loaded with all the good stuff, you can quickly whip yourself up a nutritious and delicious snack in no time. Read on for some sneaky snack hacks, perfect for when you are on the go or simply don’t feel like cooking a proper meal.

It’s important to enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods every day and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Snacking on fruit and veggie snacks between main meals can prevent hunger, keep your energy levels up, and give you an all-important boost for nutrition.

It is recommended for adults to aim for 5 serves of vegetables and 2 serves of fruit every day. To help us achieve this, our friends at Healthier.Happier have curated a great list of snacks that are both tasty, satisfying and healthy. We’ve rounded up a few of their fruit and veggie snack ideas below to help you supercharge your snacks.

Savoury snack ideas
  • Quick veggie snacks e.g. cherry tomatoes; celery sticks with thinly spread nut butter; small can of baked beans.
  • Cooked veggie snacks e.g. zucchini and corn mini fritters; savoury tomato toast; corn bread; zucchini slice. Try adding fresh or dried herbs or spices for even more flavour. See below for more on home-baking and reading food labels on store bought items.
  • Wholegrain crackers with fruit and veggie toppings e.g. ricotta cheese and tomato; hummus and cucumber.
Sweet snack ideas
  • Quick sweet snacks e.g. fruits such as apple, orange or banana; fruit salad. Mix with natural yoghurt, and/or oats, seeds and nuts for an extra boost of nutrients.
  • Baked sweet snacks e.g. blueberry and banana bread; fruit muffins.
  • Making these at home allows you to mix up flavour combinations and to know what (and how much) ingredients are used. This is important if you’re trying to be mindful of intake of hidden sugars or unhealthy fats.
  • If you’re unable to bake your own, check out our article The Art of Reading Food Labels.
